Required Supplies

  • Large Glass Microwave-safe Mix and Pour Measuring Cup

  • White Melt and Pour Soap

  • Clear Melt and Pour Soap

  • Desired Soap Molds

  • Essential Oils

  • Small Spray Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol

  • Various Colorants and Texture Enhancing Supplies

    • Examples:

      • Mica powder, natural spices and powders, botanical powders, pre-colored melt and pour soap bases

      • Turmeric for a beautiful golden color when mixed with white base

      • Ground Chia, Flax or Poppy seeds for exfoliating soap

      • Lavender buds

Melt and Pour Soap Basics

Melt and pour is an easy and quick approach for creating custom soaps without handling lye and chemicals or arduous processes. The soap comes prepared, ready for use, and can be purchased in different bases to suit your creative design and skin care needs.

The basic process for melt and pour soap is simple:

  1. Divide melt and pour soap base into small portions (cubes) and place in glass, microwave safe, easy pour measuring cup.

  2. Microwave in 15-30 increments, stirring the soap until completely melted.

  3. Add desired colorants and texture enhancers.

  4. Add essential oil for scent to desired strength.

  5. Pour into molds and let cool, spraying layers and/or finished layer with rubbing alcohol to pop bubbles and help layers adhere to each other.

  6. Remove from molds and slice into bars if needed.

Melt and Pour Ocean Soap

The ocean soap is made by creating four different layers, poured on top of each other in a loaf mold and then sliced into bars. The first two layers are individually pressed and molded before completely cooling to give the effect of foam rolling onto the sand while the last two layers, in different hues of blue, will give the effect of the ocean meeting the sky horizon.

Sand Layer

  1. Melt white soap base for the sand layer.

  2. Add turmeric and ground flax seeds to resemble the color of sand.

  3. Add essential oils for scent

  4. Pour the sand layer into the mold.

  5. As the sand layer is cooling, press and mash it to give the layer varying heights and depth.

  6. Lightly spray with rubbing alcohol.

  7. Allow the sand layer to completely cool.

Foam Layer

  1. Melt white soap base for the foam layer.

  2. Pour the foam layer over the sand layer, in a thin, smaller portion.

  3. As the foam layer is cooling, press and mash it to give the layer varying height and depth.

  4. Lightly spray with rubbing alcohol.

  5. Allow the foam layer to cool.

Water Layer

  1. Melt clear soap base for the water layer.

  2. Add a teal, bluish-green colorant to achieve the color of ocean water as desired.

  3. Pour the water layer over the foam layer, to fill 1/2 to 3/4 of the mold.

  4. Lightly spray with rubbing alcohol.

  5. Let the water layer cool.

Sky Layer

  1. Melt clear soap base for the sky layer.

  2. Add a blue colorant, slightly darker than the water layer.

  3. Pour the sky layer over the water layer.

  4. Lightly spray with rubbing alcohol.

  5. Let all layers of the soap cool completely and harden.

Complete the Ocean Soap

  1. Remove the soap from the mold

  2. Cut the soap into bars of desired width.

Melt and Pour Gem Stone Soap

The gem stone soap is created by using small, varying bases, portions and colors in a gem-shaped mold or a loaf mold, and then cut into gem-shaped designs. With each layer, the mold is moved, swirled, or set at different angles to give the effect of a geode or marbled effect.

  1. Melt a clear or white soap base and add colorant and essential oils as desired.

  2. Pour into mold and tilt, angle, rotate the mold as the soap cools.

  3. Lightly spray with rubbing alcohol.

  4. Repeat the process until the mold is filled, experimenting with different bases, colors, motions, and portions. You can even begin pouring a layer before the previous one has fully set and cooled to get a swirl effect between colors.

  5. Allow the soap in the filled mold to completely cool.

  6. If using a loaf mold, or mold other than a gem stone design, allow to completely cool and then cut and shape into gem stone shapes.
